The CMJA is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Justice Mary Mamyassin Sey of the Gambia Supreme Court. Justice Sey was Chairperson of the Sentencing Guidelines Council of the Gambia and led this Council, working closely with the CMJA and the Judiciary of England and Wales, in the development of Sentencing Guidelines for the Gambia on assault, theft and rape as well as the training of magistrates and judges on these guidelines since 2019. Her dedication for her dedication to the advancement of judicial independence and the good administration of justice firstly as a High Court Judge, despite experiencing difficulties at the time, and more recently at the Supreme Court cannot be underestimated. Her dedication to advancing the Sentencing Guidelines as Chairperson of the Sentencing Guidelines Council not to mention her the commitment to advancing the standards in the Judiciary in the Gambia and her contribution to the development of the judicial standards further afield in the Commonwealth cannot be measured. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
