For over 40 years the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association (CMJA) has played a vital role in developing judicial standards and strengthening judicial independence and enhancing the rule of law, thereby touching the lives of millions of people.

“We are not, as we are sometimes seen, mere custodians of a body of arid prescriptive rules but are, with others, the guardians of an all but sacred flame which animates and enlightens the society in which we live.”
The Rt Hon. Lord Bingham of Cornhill

The CMJA acts as a watchdog when there are threats to judicial independence and cooperates with other organizations in promoting the Commonwealth fundamental values;

The CMJA organises conferences, seminars and training courses to improve the standards of administration of justice across the Commonwealth;

The CMJA provides support to its members by disseminating information about judicial developments across the Commonwealth

In addition to becoming an Individual Member of the Association if you are a judicial officer, you can can support the furtherance of the CMJA’s objectives in a number of ways.

The CMJA Endowment Trust was set up in 2011 to raise over £1 Million Plus for the CMJA activities. To date, mostly thanks to the generosity of the Judiciary in Jersey, the CMJA has managed to raise

(May 2018)

so far towards the £1 Million Plus target.

This fund was set up in the name of the first Secretary of the Association who died in October 2003. Dorothy's time as the first Secretary of the Association was a very happy one and she was very concerned that justice (and support for justices) should be available to poor and rich nations alike.

"She had considerable knowledge of the Commonwealth, a genuine interest in its people and she was prepared to travel extensively to promote the Association, being especially concerned that people from the less well developed countries should be able to play a full part." Stated Brenda Hindley, former Editor of the CJJ.

The Fund was used to assist participation of three magistrates from Malawi, Uganda and the Solomon Islands at the CMJA’s 14th Triennial Conference, and a delegate from South Africa at the CMJA’s 15th Triennial Conference, and will be used to used to assist participation of judicial officers who would not otherwise have the opportunity to benefit from the training opportunity offered by the educational programme of the Triennial Conferences of the Association.
